Trinity Theatre celebrates its 35th birthday this year and, after more than two years of work, has secured the third lease in its history with the Diocese of Rochester which will help secure the future of Trinity Theatre and Arts Centre for a further 35 years.

Trinity Theatre’s first lease began in the 1980s when, after the building had been derelict for almost a decade and was on the verge of being torn down, a combined effort of the Civic Society and local arts drama group – Trinity Theatre Club – saved it. The second lease was signed in the mid-90s which allowed Lottery funding of half a million and substantial upgrading of the venue. As that lease was coming to its end, the new lease which covers the building and surrounding grounds has shown the confidence of the diocese to allow the theatre the role of preserving the venue for many years to come.

With a full repairing lease which carries on from the previous iterations, this new grant of period will unlock a variety of opportunities including the Heritage Lottery Fund which will be approached by the theatre to support repairs in the region of £300,000 to the stonework, roof work and glasswork and in turn help protect the venue for many future generations.

Trinity was supported in its negotiations through the extremely generous support of local law firm and corporate supporter Cripps; in particular, Associate Federica Timms, who took the lead on the legal side helping Cripps in their commitment to supporting the local community for which Trinity owes a debt of gratitude.

Executive Director at Trinity, Alex Green said, “I am excited that we were able to agree with the owners that Trinity is a suitable tenant to carry on preserving the building which will in turn allow the charity to continue its mission to provide a cultural and community destination for the people of Tunbridge Wells and beyond.”
