Set in Santa Barbara in 1979, Dorothea Fields (Annette Bening) is a determined single mother in her mid-fifties who is raising her adolescent son, Jamie, at a time of cultural change and rebellion. Dorothea enlists the help of two younger women in Jamie’s upbringing, their free spirited boarder Abbie and provocative teenage neighbour Julie.
