Marking the culmination of their five-year, all-female Shakespeare Trilogy, the Donmar Warehouse presents Phyllida Lloyd's production of Julius Caesar on screen.

After a 13-week repertory season in 2016, led by Harriet Walter, one of the greatest living Shakespearean actors, the Shakespeare Trilogy  productions have been produced for screen, with an all-female, diverse and talented cast including.

Shakepeare's drama could not be more timely. It depicts the catastrophic consequences of a political leader's extension of his powers beyond the remit of the constitution. As Brutus (Harriet Walter ) wrestles with his moral conscience over the assassination of Julius Caesar (Jackie Clune ), Mark Antony (Jade Anouka ) manipulates the crowd through his subtle and incendiary rhetoric to frenzied mob violence. There follows the descent of the country into factions and the outbreak of civil war.

In 2012, Phyllida Lloyd’s all-female theatre production of Julius Caesar placed the play in a women’s prison. It stunned audiences on both sides of the Atlantic and challenged the idea of ‘who owns Shakespeare?’ 2016 saw the project's conclusion with The Tempest joining 2014's Henry IV to form the final part of The Shakespeare Triology, performed in a new 420-seat in-the-round temporary theatre at King’s Cross, described by critics as “One of the most important theatrical event of the past twenty years"  (Susannah Clapp, Observer )

In Julius Caesar, Phyllida Lloyd has taken an explosive, arresting production of Shakespeare’s famous discourse on power, loyalty, and tragic idealism, and used her considerable directorial vision to shape it into a gripping version for screen.
