Balkan Adventure: An Afternoon with John Pilkington
Award-winning adventurer John Pilkington spent five months in 2013 exploring the Balkan mountains.
“I’d visited Yugoslavia briefly in the 1970s,” he says. “Since then they’ve abandoned communism, suffered brutal conflicts, and taken small steps towards coming together with the rest of Europe. In Bosnia and Kosovo I found people still traumatised, but many were working hard to create a peaceful future.” John also met people in the remotest villages of Albania, Macedonia and Bulgaria. His stunning photos and inspiring commentary will make this a talk not to be missed.
John Pilkington is one of Britain’s most experienced explorers and public speakers. People are always at the centre of his story-telling. His BBC Radio 4 programmes have won him several appearances on Pick of the Week, and one on Pick of the Year. He’s also contributed to Radio 4’s Excess Baggage and From Our Own Correspondent, and writes occasionally for Geographical magazine. But it’s for his thought-provoking, beautifully illustrated talks that people know him best. He’s spoken to over 1,000 audiences in six countries, and in 2006 received the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) Ness Award for his work in popularising geography and the wider understanding of the world.
See both of John Pilkington’s talks for £16. Add ticket(s) for both events to the basket to receive this discounted price.
