For Sama Syrian Charity Banquet
Tickets are now on sale to watch the critically acclaimed BAFTA winning documentary film “For Sama” followed by a delicious Syrian banquet prepared by two Syrian chefs who live locally. “For Sama” honestly and intimately examines a family’s heartbreaking struggle over five years during the brutal Syrian conflict. It has won over 60 awards. At the Cannes Film Festival, For Sama received a six-minute standing ovation.
Our two local chefs are Suzanne and Hanan. Suzanne is from Aleppo in Syria. She arrived in the UK in December 2015 with her family after fleeing the war. Suzanne loves to cook and is incredibly passionate about her country’s food.Suzanne started her cooking journey when she was 12 and learnt from her mother, grandmother and aunts. When she was 18, she met a chef in Aleppo who taught her traditional Syrian cuisine and after attending her cooking classes, Suzanne’s true passion for cooking began. During that time, Suzanne was working as a nurse and in her spare time volunteered as a chef at the Mother Teresa orphanage. It was a humbling experience and one she is immensely grateful for as it taught her so much. Suzanne has extensive experience in the catering industry and used to run her own food business. She currently works at the Hollies Care Home in Tunbridge Wells. In between her job and going to college, you’ll often find her getting involved in Migrateful cooking classes and TWWR events.Hanan’s love for her country is evident through her cooking. She learnt from her mother and takes great pride in cooking for her family on a regular basis. Hanan enjoys making traditional home style Syrian food.
The event is being hosted by Trinity to raise funds for two refugee charities working in the local community: TWWR ( Tunbridge Wells Welcomes Refugees) and Migrateful.
The banquet will take place in the Trinity Kitchen and Bar after the screening of the film.
Guests will be seated in large groups and the meal will be served family style to the tables on large sharing platters as is typical in the region. We have chosen the dishes in the Syrian banquet so that there should be something new and interesting even for people who are familiar with other Middle Eastern cooking. The banquet will consist of three courses.
The menu will include five starters ( including vegetarian and vegan options) and will be served with bread and salad.
Please note we are unable to cater for nut allergies due to the nature of the dishes
Tickets are £45 and include both the film ticket and the food. Please book before the 4th of March to ensure availability.
We very much hope you can join us on what should prove to be an absorbing and emotional journey culminating in a delicious culinary adventure!
