What is a Show in a Week?

A young girl singsWe stage a musical in one week during the Summer Holidays. No grown ups allowed in this production – only revolting children! Children joining Year 7 at Hillview this September and some of the school’s sixth formers will take all of the roles!

The project is designed to help prospective Year 7 students transition to secondary school. Over five days, we discuss the participants’ expectations and anxieties of going to secondary school while putting on a production of ‘Matilda The Musical Jr’, featuring songs by Tim Minchin from the West End show.

We will learn all of the magical musical numbers and put together some brilliant dance numbers, and rehearse the rest of the show so we can perform it for an audience at the end of the week on the Trinity stage.

Everyone who signs up gets cast in the show, with low-pressure auditions determining who takes on what role.

All cast members get digital copies of the show photos, and two free tickets to the show for family or friends (don’t worry – you can buy more if you have a large number of fans).

We provide the costumes, make-up, props and set, to give participants the most memorable experience on our professional stage. Not only will they get to be part of one of the most popular musicals, they will make new friends in Year 7 and above to take this next step in their educational journey!

This project is FREE to take part in, thanks to generous funding from Kent County Council’s Reconnect Programme.

What’s Matilda Jr. About?

Rebellion is nigh in Matilda Jr, a gleefully witty ode to the the anarchy of childhood and the power of imagination! This story of a girl who dreams of a better life and the children she inspires will have audiences rooting for the “revolting children” who are out to teach the grown-ups a lesson.

Matilda has astonishing wit, intelligence… and special powers! She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however – the school’s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils’ saving grace!

“They all did so well, my child loved it and he has already asked to book for next year!
Thank you everyone for making it so fun for them all!”
