Show in a Week: Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical Jr
Children rise up in our exciting Show in a Week for ages 8-14 (as of 31 August 2021)!
Open to everyone and no experience necessary.
Mon 9 – Sat 14 Aug 2021
Our Show in a Week is now cast, but we are looking for other activities we can run the Summer. Sign up to the Summer waiting list to find out if other activities get added or our weekly workshops waiting list.
Rebellion is nigh in Matilda JR., a gleefully witty ode to the the anarchy of childhood and the power of imagination! This story of a girl who dreams of a better life and the children she inspires will have audiences rooting for the “revolting children” who are out to teach the grown-ups a lesson.
Matilda has astonishing wit, intelligence… and special powers! She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however – the school’s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils’ saving grace!
Filled with joyous songs from the fabulously funny Tim Minchin, and a book by the brilliant Dennis Kelly, the cast and audience will be thrilled and delighted by the story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination!
This is the longer, 60-minute version of Matilda than the one we performed in 2017 with more songs and more chances to shine!

What is a Show in a Week?
Our Shows in a Week are a fantastic opportunity for children aged 8-14 – to rehearse, perform, have fun, make friends and create memories that will last for years. Over the course of a week, we will put together a show – acting, rehearsing songs and learning dance numbers to then perform at Trinity Theatre with costumes, make-up and props to friends and family.
“They all did so well, my child loved it and he has already asked to book for next year! Thank you everyone for making it so fun for them all!”

To audition, participants will need to sing a song from a similar popular show – selected by us and sent out in advance – and learn a few lines for different characters from the show and send it in via video.
Everyone who signs up will be a part of the cast whether that be auditioning for a named character or for those who don’t want to audition, as part of our fun ensemble cast. Video auditions will be held in late June / early July and are a fun, low pressure way to determine who gets what part.
When Does It Happen?
- Auditions: Cast members will be invited to send us an audition video in June, with casting announced in July.
- Rehearsals: Monday 9 August – Friday 13 August, 9.30am – 3.30pm, please ensure you bring a packed lunch and a water bottle with you!
- Performance: Saturday 14 August
Keeping Everyone Safe
In line with the February released Government Roadmap, we will be able to run this show as planned, but if we have to cancel or postpone the week, everyone will receive a full refund or the option to move to the new dates.
In addition to a week of showstopping fun and memories to last a lifetime, participants will all get two tickets to the final performance, a show t-shirt and a copy of the show photos.
Fees and Bursaries
It costs £160 to take part for the week.
No child should be unable to take part because of financial constraints. Bursaries from The Elliott Fund are available for those on low incomes. Please contact us.
