Backstage Youth Theatre 2024/25

For School Years 8-13
Application deadline: Friday 1 March, midday

Take part, behind the scenes!

“I really enjoy Trinity Backstage Youth Theatre. It’s taught me so much and made me do things I never thought I’d be able to do.”
Charley, Backstage Youth Theatre member 2021-23

What is the Backstage Youth Theatre?

Our Backstage Youth Theatre gives members the opportunity to get involved in the creative process that goes into bringing a show from concept to stage.

Through guidance from industry professionals, Backstage members take a look behind the curtain to learn about the different skills needed from each department to put on a show.

From workshops to hands on experience working on our shows, this is a great way to build confidence, meet like minded people and perhaps discover a new passion!

“Taking part in the Trinity Backstage Youth Theatre has given me excellent experience across a wide variety of backstage and technical areas. I’ve had the opportunity to work on a number of shows alongside theatre professionals, and it is such a great community to be involved in. It has also helped me go on to study Stage Management at university. I would thoroughly recommend it to all!”
Benedict, Backstage Youth Theatre member 2019-20

Members get an opportunity to take part in workshops in:

  • Sound design and composition
  • Lighting design and operation
  • Set design and building
  • Costume design, sourcing and making
  • Stage management
  • Prop design, sourcing and making
  • Puppet design and making
  • Scenic arts

Members will hone skills through problem-solving activities, operating technical equipment and being an integral part of the team working on Trinity Youth Theatre’s large and varied programme of shows (such as SIX Teen Edition, Chicago, Legally Blonde, Sister Act, Les Misérables, High School Musical, National Theatre Connections and the Edinburgh Fringe).

“I really enjoy being able to get experience on theatre equipment during live performances and seeing the process of how a production is formed. This helps me as I want to go into lighting as a career and be part of the theatre industry. It is also a great and friendly environment to be in with a brilliant team of technicians and directors to work with. I also love how Trinity has taken us to other theatres to show us different theatre layouts and equipment and has really supported me in my career path, helping me build my understanding of theatre.”
Will, Backstage Youth Theatre member, 2019-22

We also take theatre trips throughout the year and invite industry professionals in to lead workshops and take part in question and answer sessions with the group.

Sessions are a combination of workshops throughout the year, predominantly after school on a Thursday or over the weekend, and the opportunity to take part in the Trinity Youth Theatre Summer shows, NT Connections, and other performances. Members gain first-hand experience getting stuck in to working on our shows.

To take part in the shows, members need to have attended an appropriate number of workshops in advance and be in good standing with our team.

Former members have gone on to study Stage Management at university and drama school, the National Youth Theatre, The BRIT school and now work in the West End.

“Taking part in the Backstage Youth Theatre has heightened my interest in technical theatre, particularly stage management, and it’s been great fun to take part in productions, and meet some amazing friends too!”
Nathan, Backstage Youth Theatre member 2018-21

How to Apply

We are looking for members who show interest and enthusiasm for a range of backstage roles and will be willing to get stuck in to every part of backstage theatre. We are particularly keen to hear from female and non-binary identifying individuals and those from groups not traditionally represented in theatre as well as those interested in set, prop and costume design and making.

We have a limited number of spaces and, to ensure we get a good mix of interests and experience, we ask that those wanting to join complete the application form at the bottom of the page.

Forms should be filled out by the applicant and not a parent. The deadline is Friday 1 March.

If you are interested in applying for the Backstage Youth Theatre please fill out the form here.
