Full Description

Travelling with a paintbrush

by Guy Portelli RBA

I am best known as a sculptor, but I also love to travel, especially to countries that have vibrant colours in the landscape but also the people and towns.

This exhibition show cases paintings from South Africa , Egypt and latin America. These are usually small paintings done en plein air, on the rare occasion I will scale them up in the studio, but generally I like to capture the essence while I am  sitting there. What I particularly like is the engagement with nature and people. School children come over to see what you are doing as do old people every one else is far to busy to take notice.

I set off on holiday with an empty sketch book and return with many paintings, of which only a few will be framed. This exhibition shows high lights of 20 years of travel. I travel to Mabula game reserve in South Africa most years, and am planning to set up painting courses over there.

Painting is all pleasure and I am pleased to see so many people starting classes.

Guy Portelli who first came to public prominence with his appearance on Dragons Den in 2008, and was voted best negotiator in the history of the program in 2010. Has used this platform to promote the arts in the local area, in music and the arts as well as education.

Guy is the past vice president of the Royal Society of British Artists.

We have great venues locally and we should be bringing great exhibitions to them.’
