Save Our Theatre

40 More years!

Following three difficult years for Trinity, dealing with the Covid pandemic, enforced closures, inflation and a cost-of-living crisis, audiences have not returned in sufficient numbers for us to run profitably.

We rely wholly on ticket sales, cafe takings, some valuable corporate sponsors, and the support of our members through the Friendship scheme and volunteering. Whilst Trinity was fortunate to receive government sponsored grants from the Arts Council during the pandemic, this has now come to an end. In previous years we received support from TWBC, but this ended in 2020.

As many of you know, we made some very difficult decisions in 2022 to reduce the staffing. There is now a new management team which will deliver a new set of priorities combining a broad and interesting programme with a greater focus on income generation.  Our youth and creative engagement team will continue to reach out to young and senior citizens across the community. The aim is to make the theatre more robust and financially self-sufficient. With the planned opening of the clocktower later this year and taking on the management of the Pump Room in the Pantiles, we will be well set up for a sustainable future. We have some exciting plans which are in very early stages  for the programme, concerts with current West End performers and a broader cinema programme.

Not only that but, Trinity is more than a theatre. Our community outreach programme includes: ‘Trinity Encore’, a choir for those living with dementia; ‘Senior Cinema Social’, aimed at breaking the cycle of elderly loneliness in Tunbridge Wells; ‘Trinity Youth Theatre’, with workshops and shows for those aged 5-21; ‘Story Time’, a magical, first theatre experience for parents and their babies, to name but a few.

However, we have a huge challenge to meet before the end of this financial year. We need to raise at least £100,000 by the end of March to meet our short term cashflow needs and to underpin our 2023/24 budget.  We’ve already made a good start and our on our way to achieving our first target, so anything you can do to help will be hugely appreciated.

We hope that you will be able to support us at this crucial time of need.
